The nurse in the NICU let us know that the triplets are doing great. They haven't needed a ventilator yet at this point, all the nurses have given them for breathing is a CPAP (coninuous positive airway pressure). All this machine does is use the normal air around us and blow little puffs of air into the lungs that helps the babies breathe a little easier. Annie hasn't hardly used the CPAP at all, Gracie is still using the CPAP, and Ruthie was off the CPAP the last half of today.
The nurses started today to feed them. Yesterday they only received vitamins, minerals, and liquids via an IV. The nurses give a 1/3 teaspoon of milk every three hours via a tube that goes right into their stomachs. At 34 weeks their brains develop to the point that they can suck, swallow, and breathe; so for now the feeding goes through a tube.
When the babies are sleeping the nurses put a cloth over the eyes as premie babies' eyelids aren't thick enough to keep light out and the retinas develop better when it is dark.
We couldn't be more pleased and we are so grateful for the help of the nurses. Ann-Marie is able to rest now and is slowly recovering.
