Day 4 in Hospital (29 Weeks!)

Day 4 in the hospital (Monday, Sep 21) started out great, Ann-Marie was only on nifedipine, but the evening was another night of contractions.

I left late morning for a job interview in Salt Lake City, and Ann-Marie called me in the early afternoon telling me the contractions had started again. I raced back to the hospital and Ann-Marie was having contractions about every two minutes and they were as powerful as ever. So the doctors hooked her back up to the IV and put in an increased dosage of magnesium sulfate ("mag" as they refer to it here in the hospital). The doctor that day was Dr. Jacobs and he checked her cervix and she had dilated from a 1 on Friday to a 3 (they didn't check on Saturday or Sunday because contractions were so few and everytime they check Ann-Marie it stirs things up). The increase in dilation and contractions confirm that Ann-Marie will be in the hospital from now until delivery.

By 8 or 9 p.m. last night we thought the babies may very well come. If the uterus has done all it can, it doesn't matter the medication, the babies must be delivered. Also, if the cervix dilates to a 5 the babies must be delivered because they are so small at 29 weeks they could even fit through the cervix. The doctors obviously don't want this as they need a very orderly and under control C-section for the health of the babies.

However, the babies so far have not come and it's Tuesday morning. The contractions are irregular and come about 3 or 4 every hour. Ann-Marie is very drugged up with all the "mag" and is just trying to rest. She has not slept very well as she is thinking about how the babies are doing and the nurses have done continous monitoring all night long.

From the monitoring the babies don't look like they are under any stress at all. They appear to be very healthy.

  4. Anthony thanks for the update. I am so sorry I haven't been able to come and see Ann Marie. I have started school and a job. I don't know what I was thinking! Please let Ann Marie know that you are all in our prayers and we think of you often. I will call as soon as I can. I haven't wanted to wake Ann Marie up when she is already sleep deprived.

  5. Hey kiddos, thanks for updating us. I, too, have wanted to check in but don't want to take the chance of ruining a rare but restful nap. Just know that you're doing everything in your power to keep those babies in - and if they come earlier than you'd like, it's meant to be. Heavenly Father is in charge now. You do what you can - He'll take care of the rest. Love you guys!
